She compared the journey to the herd as like travelling in a fridge! Tauli-Corpus has been in Karasjok this week visiting the Sami Parliament, taking part in a seminar that included topics such as rights and climate change and was organised by the Sami parliament and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

When informed that she was travelling in an area that was populated by the ferocious predator, wolverine, she expressed concern but was glad to hear that they are afraid of people. The weather was overcast and windy. Said Eira,

It is in such weather that wolverine like the best. Then it can sneak in on the reindeer herd and their tracks are hidden (by the wind). Then it is only the crows the day after that tell you what has happened and that Jerven have some catch…

In our siida predators are a problem. Especially wolverine and lynx that both frighten and kill reindeer. We do not need to be long gone from the herd before these predators turn up

Vapsten Sami village in Sweden has been granted state aid which enables them to test new methods in monitoring reindeer. Now, the reindeer will be fitted with GPS transmitters.

Jon Mikkal Labba, the leader of the Vapsten Sami village, says that he begins his working day by turning on the computer, to see how the reindeer behave and where they are.

I can see if it the reindeers move a lot and then I know that there is interference, either predators or other things, and then we can concentrate on that area during the day.

Currently, Vapsten have 30 GPS transmitters in one siida (winter group) and Labba thinks that that it is a good number.

I think it works very well

Jon Mikael Labba says that they have chosen to have the transmitters on large females, because the transmitters are rather clumsy, so the reindeer must be large.

It is an entirely new approach that is under development in reindeer herding. Jon Mikkal Labba admits that, in this way, he may lose contact with nature and the traditional way of practicing reindeer husbandry. But he believes that the old knowledge about how reindeer behave in the wild is not always useful in today’s reindeer because nature has changed.

Nature is so altered due to forestry, so that you can not say more how the reindeer are, and in this way we get a better insight how the land looks like and we are in different areas from year to year and use large areas.

There is a widespread perception that reindeer herders exaggerate their losses and in some cases falsify predator claims in their claims for compensation. This has primarily been led by environmental organisations, but also local politicians and the media.

The pressure from politicians and others about predator losses is a load for the herders, said Johan Mathis Turi, the General Secretary of the Association of World Reindeer Herders in Kautokeino, Norway. It is so even if the predator numbers are uncertain, but still are used by the administration as if they are true. Reindeer herders become embittered with all this debate and unqualified criticism, continued Turi (pictured). The Ministry of Agriculture and Food stated that it believes that there is no basis to allege falsification by herders regarding losses to predators.

State Secretery Ola T. Heggem said that the Oddekalvs Environmental Association goes extremely far when they claim that herders swindle. ”It is dramatic to accuse people of cheating. There is no basis to assert that they deliberately cheat” and added that this is a tough question. ”It’s about questioning and problematic evidence, rules, discretion and ratios with a large gap”. He also denied that animals were in poor condition and found the proposal to let predators lower the number of reindeer as not being serious.

The farm was carrying out research into ways to tame wild reindeer.

Early on Thursday, a pack of wolves and feral dogs broke through the farm’s fence, and attacked the reindeer, killing them all in a matter of minutes. Farmers armed with pitchforks failed to stop the animals. Meanwhile, in Finnmark, Henrik I.

The Swedish Finance and Agriculture Departments are currently discussing a solution to a shortfall in predator compensation to Swedish Sami reindeer herders, according to a story from SR.se Sameby may continue to wait for clearance on the balance of predator compensation to be paid by the Sami Parliament. The Sámi Parliament has requested more money from the government. Everything indicates that the Sami Parliament may either borrow their own money for next year, or that the Finance Ministry will agree to extend credit to the Sami Parliament for 9 million SEK (860,000 Euro). There will therefore be no extra money to cover this year’s deficit as a result of the predator compensations.

Herders in this district in Trøndelag spend a great deal of time looking for carcasses for documentation purposes.

Hans Erik Sandvik, a herder from this district said that he hoped that it would help improve the documentation of predators killing reindeer in the district.

We assume that about 40-50 percent of the calves are taken by predators…but it is almost impossible to document losses. We find between 50-80 carcasses a year, but most, especially calves are difficult to find. Most of our work goes towards looking for carcasses

In this region there are six herding families, in all about 35 people, herding around 3000 reindeer.

Mortensson stressed the importance of the intergenerational transfer of knowledge and that older herders don’t retire, rather play a critical role in educating the future generations.

We cannot survive with these big losses to predators, year after year. It makes me question more whether it is appropriate that my children become full time reindeer herders. Do they have a profession in the future, or will they get an education in another occupation? These questions and thoughts arise ever more frequently in my head

Mortensson gave an overview of the reindeer year- starting with calving in higher ground in the spring, after which calves follow their mothers and eat new green vegetation in lower areas. As biting insects increase, reindeer again head for higher ground and at this time, reindeer are gathered and ‘earmarked’ to show ownership. After summer comes ‘mushroom madness’, when reindeer go into ‘rapture’ for mushrooms. The late fall is time for another gathering for slaughter. In the new year, reindeer are moved to the winter pastures and then on to spring calving again.

Mortensson is concerned about the future of the livelihood and whether future generations of Sami reindeer herders in this region. He singled out losses to predators as being the biggest problem in their region. Each spring around 2000 calves are born and nearly 400 are lost -

70-80 percent of all the dead reindeer are caused by predators. In addition, there are some still-born calves and some die as a result of stress due to the activity and traffic in the calving area. Calving is a very sensitive time for us. In that time, we want the least amount of interference around the reindeer.
