Updated - Wind Farms - Enormous Increase in Interest in Norway

(Pic Barents Observer) With soaring energy prices, alternative energy from domestic sources are increasingly of interest to nation states. Espcially if they are touted as being ‘green’ (low CO2 emissions) and are promoted by state subsidy programs.

As a result, Norway is seeing an explosion of wind farm proposals, the majority of which will be placed in areas of reindeer husbandry. Two stories today in the Norwegian media point to 2 huge planned schemes that are in reindeer husbandry areas. Troms Energy, is planning to establish a windmill park of 22 windmills on the island of Senja in the county of Troms in northern Norway. In the South, Statskog SF and Albert Collett company are planning a gigantic windmill park in Overhalla, Høylandet and Fosnes, of 126 windmills, according to Namdalsaviisa.

In response to these plans, Terje Haugen the head of the Fosen reindeer husbandry district in the South Sami area said to NRK Trondelag  that several of the windmills will be in the middle of the winter pastures. Haugen said that the livelihood is under big pressure from wind power and it poses a real threat to its survival.
